MBIRA Recordings LibraryThe MBIRA recordings library includes field recordings spanning the last three decades, some of which are very high quality recordings (some not). Starting in 2002, MBIRA is making digital field recordings, available on CDs. Most of the older recordings are available on 90-minute cassette tapes, including a J-card listing piece names, musicians and tunings. These cassettes are being gradually converted to CD format. All proceeds over costs go to the musicians on the recordings, so please do not copy them for others. The proceeds of tape sales are contributing to the support of over 60 extended families of traditional musicians in Zimbabwe. Mbira Piece Intensives for mbira students have 75 to 90 minutes of different versions of the same piece, gathered from the entire MBIRA library. An increasing number mbira CDs are available from MBIRA, including both digital recordings and converted analog recordings. MBIRA will attempt to get permission from Zimbabwean record companies to make CDs of old out of print Zimbabwean mbira 45's and lp's available. If anyone is able to make a donation toward puchasing these rights for MBIRA, it would be greatly appreciated. MBIRA is presently converting its library to digital format and making new digital recordings. Donations toward the high costs of this conversion process are tax-deductible, and will be greatly appreciated. And PLEASE contact us if you are willing to have your field recordings of Shona music added to the MBIRA library, either for sale or for archival purposes only. |
