Boniface Mutandwa 2001 Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals, with friends clapping, dancing...
Boniface Mutandwa 2001 Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals, with friends clapping, dancing... This is a fun, very casual recording of guys having fun with drinking and music after a long day. Talented mbira player and vocalist Mutandwa fumbles here and there, sometimes changing songs unpredictably (plenty of drinking...), but his friends enthsiastically cheer him on with makwa (handclapping), dancing, and occasional singing. And Mutandwa sometimes scolds them, if they clap in the wrong place with the music. Mutandwa was an mbira partner and brother-in-law of the late Mondrek Muchena, and at one point sings “Why did you die, Muchena?”. Mondrek’s son Christopher is one of the friends clapping on this recording. Recorded 24 April 2001 in Harare. Musician: Boniface Mutandwa. Tuning: Nyamaropa. [Total time: 84:31]

Newton Gwara & Fabian Rujuwa 2001 – Nyamaropa Dongonda “Njari Makonde” and Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals The signature vocals of Zimbabwe’s great singer “Matemai” Newton Gwara soar here. Rujuwa plays the kushaura part on a nyamaropa tuning mbira. while Matemai plays the kutsinhira part on an mbira an octave lower, in nyamaropa dongonda (which he calls “njari Makonde”) tuning. This combination creates an interesting texture that combines in an exciting way with the vocals. Recorded 19 April 2001 in Highfield by Erica Azim. Tuning: Nyamaropa, Nyamaropa Dongonda. Rinos “Simboti” Mukuwurirwa: Saungweme Tuning Mbira 26 April 1996
Rinos “Simboti” Mukuwurirwa: Saungweme Tuning Mbira 26 April 1996 Respected mbira player, and mbira maker, Rinos “Simboti” Mukuwurirwa plays the delightfully non-Western sounding Saungweme tuning, “the sound of bees”. Simboti studied mbira with the famed Mubayiwa Bandambira in his youth, and was taught to be able to start a piece one or two notes higher, or lower, than is usual. Thus, some of the very unusual versions of traditional mbira pieces on this recording. The last track is the tuning of Simboti’s mbira at the time of this recording. Beauler Dyoko at the Manyame River 17 April 1996: Solo & with Erica Azim, Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals
Beauler Dyoko at the Manyame River 17 April 1996: Solo & with Erica Azim, Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals When asked what her favorite place to play mbira was, “Ambuya” Beauler Dyoko said emphatically, “The river, where I go fishing.” Thus, this recording was recorded sitting on a granite slab, amongst giant granite boulders, at the Manyame River, not far from Ambuya’s home in St. Mary’s, Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe. Tracks 1-7 are solo, and tracks 8-12 add Erica Azim playing kutsinhira. Both mbira classics and Ambuya’s compositions are included. In 1969, Beauler Dyoko broke the gender barrier to become the first woman mbira player published on records in Zimbabwe. Her funky rhythmic feel on the mbira, and lovely singing voice, made her popular for generations, leading both her mbira group and mbira-centered electric band. She mixed traditional lyrics with her own (often feminist) ones. Recorded by Erica Azim & Tracy Willett, photo by Tracy Willett. Tuning: Nyamaropa. [Total time: 89:16]

Tute Chigamba 25 April 1986: Gandanga (Mavembe) and Nyamaropa Tunings
Tute Chigamba 25 April 1986: Gandanga (Mavembe) and Nyamaropa Tunings More than 25 years ago, Tute Chigamba was already playing mbira with seemingly effortless mastery. Most tracks are played in gandanga (mavembe) tuning and tracks 13-16 are played in nyamaropa tuning. The pitches of the instruments are close enough to those used in MBIRA workshops for students to enjoy playing along (nyamaropa tuning near B pitch and mavembe tuning near A pitch). Chigamba is joined by daughter Irene on tracks 17 and 18. This recording was made in a casual context, and household and neighborhood sounds are heard at times. Tute Chigamba “Teaching” - Gandanga/Mavembe and Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira - 9 Feb 1991
Tute Chigamba “Teaching” - Gandanga/Mavembe and Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira - 9 Feb 1991 In this recording, mbira master Tute Chigamba is teaching - but this is traditional style teaching, where he just says the name of the piece and which part it is...and then plays it in a slightly more sedate style than usual. Tracks 11 and 12 are nyamaropa tuning, the other tracks are gandanga/mavembe tuning. This is a very casual recording made at Chigamba’s house in Highfield, Harare, so the sweet SWEET mbira is accompanied at times by ambient sounds of cooking, kids, etc. (Note that this is a double album, over 260 MB, so use a fast internet connection to download it.) Forward Kwenda Solo 5 February 1991: Mavembe/Gandanga Tuning Mbira & Vocals Fans of Forward Kwenda’s version of Nyama musango now known as Kanhurura will particularly enjoy this recording, where he played it several times. In 1991, he was still calling it Nyama musango. amd one track evolves from Nyama musango into Kanhurura. ‘Kanhurura’ means ‘a small thing used to help get something bigger’, such as a stick used to knock a mango from the tree. In this case, it refers to the song being powerful in bringing the ancestor spirits. Tuning: Gandanga/Mavembe. [Total time: 83:50]

Thomas 'Sekuru Gora' Wadharwa & Tute Chigamba; Tute & Henry Chigamba - Gandanga/Mavembe Tuning Mbira 4 Feb 1991
Thomas 'Sekuru Gora' Wadharwa & Tute Chigamba; Tute & Henry Chigamba - Gandanga/Mavembe Tuning Mbira 4 Feb 1991 Thomas 'Sekuru Gora' Wadharwa was Zimbabwe’s most famous and popular mbira singer for decades, known for his soulful vocals, and often hilarious lyrics...sung with a straight face! Here, the master singer and mbira player plays with friend and master mbira player Tute Chigamba on tracks 1-7. On tracks 8-14, Chigamba plays mbira with son Henry. Chigamba’s daughter Irene adds occasional vocals on a few tracks, and plays hosho on tracks 12-14 with one hand...while nursing her 2 week old daughter, held in her other arm! Recorded by Brett Stewart. Mixed by Erica Azim. Photos by Todd Boekelheide and Julienne Battalia. Tuning: Gandanga/Mavembe. [Total time: 92:56]

Mondrek Muchena Solo 29 January 1991- Nyamaropa & Mavembe (Gandanga Tuning Mbira The late Mondrek Muchena was a rock-solid kushaura player with a sunny personality. Tracks 1-4 and 8-10 are in nyamaropa tuning. Tracks 5-7 are in mavembe (gandanga) tuning. Mondrek was also an amazing singer, but most of this recording is mbira alone. Beauler Dyoko 1991 - Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals
Beauler Dyoko 1991 - Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira & Vocals In 1969, Beauler Dyoko broke the gender barrtier to become the first woman mbira player published on records in Zimbabwe. Her funky rhythmic feel on the mbira, and lovely singing voice, have made her popular for generations, leading both her mbira group and mbira-centered electric band. She mixes traditional lyrics with her own (often feminist) ones. This casual recording, made at her home on 29 January 1991, includes traditional mbira pieces, and Dyoko’s own Zimbabwe pop-style songs. Recorded 29 January 1991 at St. Mary's, Chitungwiza by Brett Stewart, mixed by Erica Azim, photo by Brett Stewart.. Musician: Beauler Dyoko. Tuning: Nyamaropa. [Total time: 86:50]
